Swedish style massage is typically a light to medium pressure massage using long smooth strokes known as effleurage and a “kneading” technique called petrissage. This is the most common type of massage in the United States and has origins back to 1770. Recent studies by the National Institutes of Health have also shown that just one Swedish massage can improve a person’s immune system. Swedish massage is usually performed using oil or lotion. This type of massage is gentle and appropriate for pregnant women, the elderly and those undergoing cancer treatment. Swedish massage is used to treat many conditions including depression, high blood pressure, anxiety and headaches. It is excellent for promoting stress reduction and improving circulation.
